Privacy Policy

Your privacy is important to us. This policy explains what personal information SIA collects, why, who else handles it, and how you can see, correct or delete it.

1. Information We Collect

Forms in our ads on Facebook, Instagram and Google

When you fill in one of our lead forms inside a Meta (Facebook or Instagram) or Google ad, we receive:

• your name and email address;
• the street address of the home you want assessed; and
• your average monthly electric bill.

Meta and Google collect these answers in their own apps and pass them to us, and they also handle them under their own privacy policies (Meta, Google). We do not ask for your phone number.

The free-analysis form

Our calculator, our studies and our installer-matching page offer a free analysis of your own home. To prepare it we ask for your email address, the street address of the home and, if you choose, your average monthly electric bill. The form is run by Tally, which stores your answers and forwards them to our inbox; if you email us instead, your message comes straight to our inbox. We use these details only to prepare your analysis and reply to you. Asking for one commits you to nothing, and we do not ask for your phone number.

If we introduce you to an installer

To pay the cash back described on our installer matching page, we ask for your utility’s Permission to Operate letter, which shows your name, address and system size, and for the details we need to send you the payment.

An SIA account and saved projects

An account is optional. If you create one we store your email address and, if you add them, your name and home address. Your password is handled by our sign-in provider, Supabase, and is never seen by us; if you sign in through another service instead, that service shares your name and email address with us. Projects you save store the address, its map coordinates, your design, the financial assumptions you entered and the results. A copy of each saved project is also kept in your own browser so it reopens quickly.

Addresses you type into the Solar Design Studio

To find and model your roof, the address you enter is sent to Google (its Maps and Solar services) and, if Google cannot place it, to OpenStreetMap’s geocoding service. Only the map coordinates, never the address, go to the National Laboratory of the Rockies to simulate your system’s output and look up your utility. So that the same roof is not fetched twice, our server keeps a cache of the roof data Google returns for each address looked up.

Quotes you paste

If you paste a solar quote into the studio, its text is sent to Anthropic’s Claude to pick out the numbers. Those numbers fill in the form; nothing else from the quote is saved to your account or to our analytics.

Feedback

Feedback you send, and your email address if you choose to give it, is forwarded to our inbox by email. It is not stored on our servers.

Analytics

Our website uses Matomo Analytics, an open-source and privacy-focused analytics tool, to collect non-personally identifiable information. This data helps us better understand how visitors interact with our site and allows us to improve the user experience. Here’s a breakdown of the information we collect:

• The Only Device and Browser Information We Gather: We gather data about the type of device (e.g., desktop, mobile, tablet), operating system (e.g., Windows, macOS, Android), and browser (e.g., Chrome, Firefox, Safari) used to access our site. This information allows us to optimize the site for different devices and platforms, ensuring a consistent experience for all users. We do not pull any other information about you or your device. Ever.
• Location Data: Matomo uses anonymized IP addresses to estimate your approximate geographic location (e.g., city, region, or country). We have configured Matomo to anonymize the last two bytes of IP addresses, which means that the IP addresses are partially masked (e.g., 192.168.xxx.xxx). This reduces the precision of location data, protecting individual privacy while still giving us general location insights.
• Pages Visited: We track the pages you visit on our website, including the URLs and the sequence in which you access them. This helps us identify which pages are most engaging and how visitors navigate through our content.
• Time Spent on Each Page: We collect data on the duration of each visit to specific pages. This information provides insights into which content holds visitors’ attention and helps us make informed decisions about content structure.
• Interaction Details: We record interactions, such as clicks on specific links, buttons, or other interactive elements within the site. This helps us understand which features and links are most useful or engaging for users. Three specifics worth stating plainly, because they go slightly beyond a plain click count: when you open one of the explainer panels on our home page we also record how long it stayed open, so we can tell a mis-click from something you actually read; on our long studies we record how far down the page you read, in quarters; and where a number would otherwise be revealing — a system size, a payback period — we record a range rather than the figure itself. We never record the address you enter, the text of a quote you paste, or any dollar amount specific to your household.
• Referring Websites: We track the website or source that referred you to our site, such as search engines or social media platforms. Understanding referral sources helps us know where our traffic is coming from and which channels are most effective in bringing visitors to our site.

2. How We Use Your Information

• To prepare your solar assessment and send it to you by email.
• To answer your questions and follow up on the assessment you asked for.
• With your permission, to introduce you to one installer (see section 3), and to pay your cash back.
• To run your account and your saved projects.
• To improve the site, using analytics that never include your name, email or address.

We never add you to promotional lists. If you would rather we stopped emailing you, reply and say so.

3. Installer Introductions, and How SIA Is Paid

• One installer, and only when you ask. We pass your details to a single vetted installer, and only after you confirm by email that you want to be introduced to that installer. Never a list, never an auction.
• What they receive. Your name, email address, street address, monthly electric bill and the solar assessment we prepared for your home.
• How SIA is paid. The installer pays SIA a finder’s fee if they meet you, and a larger one if they install your system. We pass part of that fee back to you as cash back; see how installer matching works.
• What that means under California law. Because the installer pays us, passing them your details can count as a “sale” of personal information. We only do it when you ask, and you can tell us not to at any time (see section 9).
• After the introduction. The installer handles your information under its own privacy policy.

4. Who Else Handles Your Information

These services process information on our behalf, and only for the purpose shown. Our website has no advertising pixels, and we do not pass your details to advertisers.

5. Cookies and Browser Storage

We use cookies and your browser’s local storage to keep you signed in, to reopen saved projects quickly, and for Matomo’s visit counts. You can clear or block them in your browser settings; if you do, you will be signed out.

6. Analytics and Tracking

We prioritize privacy in our analytics practices and have configured Matomo Analytics to respect the privacy choices of our users. Matomo data is anonymized, used only internally to improve the site, and not shared with anyone else. Here’s how we ensure transparency and control over tracking:

• Respecting "Do Not Track": If your browser is set to "Do Not Track," Matomo will honor this setting and exclude you from analytics tracking. This gives users more control over their online privacy, allowing them to opt out of tracking at the browser level.
• IP Anonymization: We have enabled IP anonymization in Matomo. Specifically, the last two bytes of your IP address are masked (e.g., 192.168.xxx.xxx). This means that while we may know the general region of visitors, we cannot identify individual users based on IP address. Anonymizing IP addresses enhances privacy while still providing meaningful location data.
• Opt-Out Option: In addition to respecting "Do Not Track," we provide an explicit opt-out option below. If you prefer not to be tracked by our analytics, you can use this feature to disable tracking at any time. Simply check the box below to opt out of tracking, and Matomo will stop collecting data for your visit.
• Kept apart. What you tell us in a lead form is never merged with Matomo analytics or any tracking identifier.

7. How Long We Keep It, and How We Protect It

Lead details are seen by the SIA core team only, until you ask to be introduced to an installer. We use appropriate security measures to protect everything we hold from unauthorized access, alteration or disclosure.

8. Your Rights and Choices

Wherever you live, you can ask us to show you what we hold about you, correct it, delete it, stop sharing it with installers, or stop emailing you. Email contact@siapolicy.ai from the address we have for you. We comply within two business days. You can also delete your account and saved projects yourself from the account menu, and opt out of analytics with the control in section 6 or your browser’s “Do Not Track” setting.

9. California Privacy Rights

If you live in California, the California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act, gives you the right to know what personal information we collect and how we use and disclose it; to delete it; to correct it; to opt out of its sale or sharing; and not to be treated differently for using any of these rights.

The only disclosure of ours that may count as a sale is passing your identifiers and electric bill to one installer who pays SIA, and only when you have asked for the introduction. We do not share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising, and we do not knowingly collect or sell the personal information of anyone under 16.

Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information. Email contact@siapolicy.ai with the subject “Do Not Sell or Share”, and we will not introduce you to any installer from then on.

You can make any of these requests yourself or through an authorized agent. We verify a request by confirming it with you at the email address we hold. We comply within two business days, and always within the 45 days the law allows.

10. Data Sources

A good portion of SIA's knowledge is derived from data provided by the DSIRE® Database. We ensure that all data is used in accordance with DSIRE’s Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 (CC-BY-SA) license.

11. Google Safe Browsing

We are committed to maintaining a safe and secure experience for our users. To help identify and warn users about unsafe websites, we rely on Google Safe Browsing. This service helps protect users from malicious sites by detecting and blocking websites that contain:

• Malware: Websites that may install harmful software on your device without your consent.
• Phishing Scams: Websites that attempt to trick users into sharing personal information such as passwords or credit card details.
• Other Harmful Content: Websites that exploit vulnerabilities or engage in deceptive practices.
• If a URL passes Google Safe Browsing: It will display a icon, indicating the website is safe to browse.
• If a URL fails Google Safe Browsing: It will display a icon, warning users to avoid the site. You can also manually check whether the URL is potentially dangerous to visit by using Google Safe Browsing's URL checker.

If you encounter a warning about an unsafe site while browsing, we strongly advise against proceeding to that site. You can learn more about Google Safe Browsing on their website here.
